Listing 3.10.1 : pin down 'Pin down' is the most common used tactic .With 'pin down' ,the activities of the opponent's pieces can be minimized .This will remain the passive condition of the opponent .One thing to remember is : the side who uses 'pin down' must take necessary action as quick as possible to maximize his advantage .He may use that opportunity to gain material or concentrate his piece on one side to have a great attack .

Black is having double chariots and one pawn which takes over the material advantage .However ,due to the bad position of chariots and king ,black is unable to prevent the attack from red double horse and double pawns .Black double chariot are pinned down by horse and pawn to protect the king .Finally ,the edge red pawn can move forward without any block .

In this example ,although black gains advance in material (two chariots and one pawn ) ,the bad position of black makes him defeated by red's two horses and two pawns .Red makes use of 'pin down' tactic and defeats black with one unstopped pawn .
